What is GROL License plus Ship Radar Endorsement ?



General Radiotelephone Operator License is required to adjust, maintain,
or internally repair FCC licensed radiotelephone transmitters in the
aviation, maritime, and international fixed public radio services.


It is also required to operate the following:
  • Any maritime land radio station or compulsorily equipped ship
    radiotelephone station operating with more than 1500 watts of
    peak envelope power.

  • Voluntarily equipped ship and aeronautical(including aircraft) stations
    with more than 1000 watts of peak envelope power.

Qualifications:

To qualify for the GROL, you must:
  • Be a legal resident of (or otherwise eligible for employment in) the United States.
  • Be able to receive and transmit spoken messages in English.
  • Pass element 1 (MROP), and element 3 (GROL) written exams.
The FCC GROL License is good for the licensee's lifetime.

To Obtain the GROL License, submit to the FCC Form 605 along with the appropriate Proof of Passing Certificates for elements 1 and 3.

Many Commercial Operator License Examination Managers file these documents for applicants who test with them.

Ask your COLEM if it provides this service to its customers.



Marine Radio Operator Permit is required to operate radiotelephone stations aboard vessels of more than 300 gross tons, and vessels; which carry more than six passengers for hire in the open sea, or any tidewater area of the United States.

It is also required to operate certain aviation radiotelephone stations and certain coast radiotelephone stations.



Element 1 - Marine Radio Operator Permit
  •  Basic radio law and operating practice.

  • Element 1 exam consists of questions in the following categories:

  • Hold or qualify for a GROL, or GMDSS Radio Maintainer's License, or First Class Radiotelegraph Operator's Certificate, or Second Class Radiotelegraph Operator's Certificate.

  • Pass Element 8 written exam.
Submit FCC Form 605 along with the appropriate Proof of Passing Certificate for element 8.

  • Ship Radar Techniques. Specialized theory and practice applicable to the
    proper installation, servicing, and maintenance of ship radar equipment
    in general use for marine navigation purposes.

    • Transmitting Systems - 8 questions
    • Receiving Systems - 10 questions
    • Display & Control Systems - 10 questions
    • Antenna Systems - 5 questions

Ham Radio License Test



Operating an ham station requires an ham radio license from the FCC.

Before receiving a license, you must pass a test administered by a team of volunteer examiners (VEs).

After you successfully complete the ham test, the VEC collects your Form 605 from your VE team, and after carefully screening it, forwards the information to the FCC for processing.

The VEC may also handle registering an examinee with the FCC.

Your operating authority begins when your license information appears on the amateur service license database of the Universal Licensing System.



Element 2 - Technician Class

  • The Technician Class operator license's privileges include operating an ham station, that may transmit on channels in any of 17 frequency bands above 50 MHz with up to 1,500 watts of power.

    Technician Class operator's also have privileges in four amateur service bands in the HF range.(3-30 MHz)


  • Element 2 exam consists of questions in the following categories:


    • FCC Rules - 6 questions
    • Operating Procedures - 3 questions
    • Radio wave characteristics - 3 questions
    • Amateur radio practices & station setup - 2 questions
    • Electrical principles - 4 questions
    • Electrical components - 4 questions

Element 3 - General Class

  • The General Class operator license's privileges include all 27 amateur service bands. Upon accreditation by a Volunteer-Examiner Coordinator (VEC), an individual can help administer certain examinations.

  • Element 3 exam consists of questions in the following categories:


    • Commission's Rules -5 questions
    • Operating Procedures -6 questions
    • Radio Wave Propagation -3 questions
    • Amateur Radio Practices -5 questions
    • Electrical Principles -3 questions
