GROL & Radar Licenses
General Radiotelephone Operator License is required to adjust, maintain, or internally repair FCC licensed radiotelephone transmitters in the aviation, maritime, and international fixed public radio services.
It is also required to operate the following:
Any maritime land radio station or compulsorily equipped ship radiotelephone station operating with more than 1500 watts of peak envelope power.
Voluntarily equipped ship and aeronautical(including aircraft) stations
with more than 1000 watts of peak envelope power.
Qualifications:
To qualify for the GROL, you must:
Be a legal resident of (or otherwise eligible for employment in) the United States.
Be able to receive and transmit spoken messages in English.
Pass element 1 and element 3 exams. (MROP & GROL)
The FCC GROL License is good for the licensee's lifetime.
To Obtain the GROL License, submit to the FCC Form 605 along with the appropriate Proof of Passing Certificates for elements 1 and 3.

Marine Radio Operator Permit
Marine Radio Operator Permit is required to operate radiotelephone stations aboard vessels of more than 300 gross tons,
and vessels; which carry more than six passengers for hire in the open sea, or any tidewater area of the United States.
It is also required to operate certain aviation radiotelephone stations and certain coast radiotelephone stations.

Basic radio law and operating practice.

Ship Radar Endorsement:
Ship Radar Endorsement is required to repair, maintain, or internally adjust ship radar equipment.
To qualify, you must:
Hold or qualify for a GROL, or GMDSS Radio Maintainer's License, or First Class Radiotelegraph Operator's Certificate, or Second Class Radiotelegraph Operator's Certificate.
Pass Element 8 written exam.
Submit FCC Form 605 along with the appropriate Proof of Passing Certificate for element 8.

Ship Radar Techniques. Specialized theory and practice applicable to the proper installation, servicing, and maintenance of ship radar equipment in general use for marine navigation purposes.

Ham Radio Tests
To receive a license, you must pass a test administered by a team of volunteer examiners. (Test Locations & Contact Info)
After you successfully complete the test, the VEC collects your Form 605 from your VE team, and
after carefully screening it, forwards the information to the FCC for processing.
